Foreigners love living in the north of Mauritius

Category Property development

Island lovers who yearn to live the beach lifestyle are attracted to Mauritius for a myriad reasons. Depending on their age and stage in life, foreigners will buy to suit their lifestyle needs and desires. Their common goal is to achieve an improved quality of life, in a safe, secure country, where health and wellness are priorities.

Property developers such as 2Futures design and build accommodation with this in mind. There are plenty of property investment opportunities, whether you want a lock-up and go apartment, a villa on an estate, a senior serviced residence, a penthouse with an ocean view or a beachfront residence. You will always get great rental returns when you buy luxury property in the north.

This part of Mauritius is especially popular because the villages here are developing with tourists and foreigners in mind. That means that they offer more of the modern, contemporary amenities that foreigners are used to alongside typical island attractions.

Life in the north

To understand the significance of the address, it's important to know a thing or two about direction on the island. Locals refer to "The North" as opposed to "The South", and these regions are signposted accordingly. For some reason the east and west of the island aren't treated with the same reverence. It's only once you start exploring the island yourself, instead of sticking to the confines of a resort or other holiday accommodation if you're an occasional visitor, when these descriptions begin to make sense.

It's almost as though the compass points are weighted in favour of The North - if you hit the highway, and take a wrong turn, you never have to worry about getting seriously lost. Signboards (indicating The North or The South) and roundabouts are plentiful, so you can drive around in circles all day until you figure out where to get off (so to speak).

Another thing to be aware of is that you can lose the GPS signal when you're crossing the island. That means - if you're driving yourself and have no sense of direction - you will have to embark on an adventure or brush up on your French to get directions to overcome the inconvenience of having no automated directions on your mobile phone.

Beach water sports

The directional focus might have something to do with the fact that The North has long been punted as the place to be for tourists and expats looking for a new island home. The Grand Baie area, in particular, has developed accordingly and is often referred to as vibrant or vibey. The next village is Pereybere, which is a few minutes' drive away. If you're feeling energetic you can walk there as well.

Living in this area means you get to switch between moods and energy levels. Pereybere is quiet and peaceful while Grand Baie is busier, with a plethora of activities and attractions to entertain those who need them. There is everything from modern malls to eateries, coffee shops, gyms, nightclubs and bars. There are also top international schools and medical facilities in the north. On the beach, of course, you'll be able to access all the water sports that the area is known for.
